In our studio, I avoid smooth, perfect lines. Instead, I use digital brushes that emulate traditional media - specifically gouache. These brushes have built-in texture, meaning they respond to the pressure of the stylus just like a real brush responds to a canvas. If I press lightly, the stroke breaks up, showing the “grain” of the paper underneath. If I press harder, the colour goes down opaque and flat.

This matters because pets aren’t perfect geometric shapes. A dog’s scruffy ear or a cat’s soft cheek needs a brush that can be messy and expressive. By using tools that mimic dry-brush techniques and wet paint blending, I can capture your pet’s personality without the portrait looking like a sterile graphic.
