Drawing Pet Eyes with Personality: Colour, Light and Expression

They say the eyes are the window to the soul, and in pet portraiture, this couldn’t be more true. If the eyes aren’t right, the portrait won’t feel like your pet. That’s why I spend a significant amount of time getting the expression perfect.

It starts with the shape and placement, but the real magic happens with colour and light. Pet eyes are rarely just brown or blue; they reflect the environment. I layer deep, rich tones for the pupil and iris, and then add subtle variations of colour - perhaps a hint of amber or a reflection of the sky - to give the eye depth.

The final, crucial step is the catchlight - the tiny reflection of light on the wet surface of the eye. That single dot of off-white is what brings the portrait to life, giving the pet that alert, loving expression you know so well.
