The Importance of Paper Grain and Gouache Texture in Digital Pet Art

If you look closely at a PawsPal portrait, you’ll notice it doesn’t look like a flat digital file. You can see the subtle tooth of watercolour paper and the matte, slightly chalky finish of gouache paint. This texture is entirely intentional.

Even though I draw on an iPad, I use high-quality digital paper overlays and specialized brushes to simulate traditional media. The paper grain adds a tactile quality to the artwork, making it feel like something you could reach out and touch. The gouache-style brushes provide a beautiful opacity that allows me to layer light colours over dark ones, just like real paint.

This combination of paper grain and traditional paint textures is what defines our signature style. It ensures that when your portrait is printed, it looks like an original painting rather than a computer graphic.
